Nestled into the broody and iconic Howell Mountain at 1,800 feet above sea level sits Hershey Vineyard; our most significant vineyard that makes up the backbone of VASO wines. When you come to a tasting at the Estate, you may see pulled soil samples to showcase the wildly diverse soil found in the Hershey Vineyard. It’s this varied soil composition that lends to the distinct flavor profiles found in VASO wines. Corestone volcanic and rhyolitic bedrock composition in the soil tell of a more wild time on Earth, when Howell Mountain was truly wild. That little piece of terroir stays with us as we cultivate an expression of this soil history using Bordeaux-style grapes grown on this property.
Our home winery at 1500 Whitehall Lane is located on the edge of town in St. Helena, Napa Valley, and somewhere we are proud to call home. You may have heard the term “Rutherford Dust” to describe wines from our region area of Napa Valley. Tucked away at the northern point of the Rutherford bench, the Helms vineyard showcases the typical characteristics for this appellation, and then some. But what exactly IS alluvial soil anyway, and what makes it so unique?
